Discover Castle Howard
Start out from Yew Tree Cottage and just a short drive away you will discover Castle Howard. Today it is the home to the
Hon Simon and Mrs Howard and their children, but you can still enjoy a full, family day there enjoying all the estate has to offer.
The House
Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, its creation spanned the lifetime of three Earls and numerous craftsmen.
Vanbrugh's design evolved into a Baroque structure with two symmetrical wings projecting to either side of a north-south axis.
The Gardens
Relax amid idyllic gardens, enjoy woodland and lakeside walks, and let off steam on the adventure playground.
Castle Howard has extensive and diverse gardens. The house is prominently situated on a
ridge and this was exploited to create a stunning English landscape park.
Brideshead Revisited
Castle Howard most famously appeared in the 1981 tv serial and 2008 adaptations of Evelyn Waugh's novel, Brideshead Revisited.
